Historical QOD 12/18/08: What is the major risk factor for the development of allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome?
Renal insufficiency. Allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome (AHS) is a potentially life-threatening cutaneous adverse reaction. It has been hypothesized that the accumulation of allopurinol, or its metabolites, in patients with renal insufficiency is the major cause for allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome.
