In children with grade 2B esophageal injury from a caustic ingestion, this therapy resulted in a significant benefit on endoscopy or barium swallow and reduced the duration of parenteral nutrition?
As noted in a recent review paper by Hoffman RS et al, Usta and colleagues randomly assigned children with grade 2B esophageal injuries to 3 days of methylprednisolone (1 g per 1.73 m2 of body surface area per day) or placebo plus 1 week of ceftriaxone and ranitidine. The methylprednisolone group showed a significant benefit with no complications noted. [Hoffman RS et al. Ingestion of Caustic Substances. NEJM 2020; 382: 173901748. doi: 10.1056/NEJMra1810769]
