The American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT)

The American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT) was established in 1968 as a not-for-profit multi-disciplinary organization uniting scientists and clinicians in the advancement of research, education, prevention and treatment of diseases caused by chemicals, drugs and toxins.

AACT Position on Acetaminophen and Pregnancy

The American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT) supports and aligns with the recent public statements released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the Society for Maternal–Fetal Medicine (SMFM), the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (SDBP), and the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) as well as the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), and the United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) regarding the association  between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder. Acetaminophen is an effective antipyretic and analgesic and remains the preferred option during pregnancy, as few safer alternatives exist.

Association is not causation. We strongly agree with these organizations’ assertions that current evidence does not establish a causal relationship between acetaminophen use in pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder. Clinical guidance should weigh the risks and benefits of any medication, including acetaminophen, against the known dangers of untreated maternal fever and pain.

There is an ongoing need for continued rigorous research to clarify any potential risks, refine patient counseling, and inform policy. The AACT remains committed to collaborating with peer organizations and public health partners to support high-quality science and clear, responsible communication on the safety of the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy.
